After short stints in the Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, Communications and Math departments, I was finally forced by "The Man" to select a permanent major in my fifth year of college - also known as the sophsenjunmore year.īeing your average slacker, I learned early on to never schedule a class before 11am. Years of love from the modding community have managed to fix these issues and improve on many features in the game.SimCity holds a special place in my heart. If I were ranking modded games, however, this would be at the top. These reasons, among others, keep it from reaching greater heights on our list. The traffic system is also somewhat broken making traffic jams unavoidable with even the most efficient roads. Regrettably, the game suffers from serious optimization issues that require it to be run on a monster PC to avoid lagging. The soundtrack is also among the best in the series. Whether it’s way too much micro-management or just enough has been a divide between parts of the community ever since, but nobody questions how much work was put into fleshing it out. The amount of micro-management you can do is insane.Įvery little detail can be controlled to affect the bigger picture. The graphics are beautiful, the simulation detailed and the musical score is a masterpiece. In fact, were it not for those launch issues, fans would probably be very split on the question of whether this is the best SimCity game to date. That said, once they did fix it (and once they added offline play) the game wasn’t half-bad. It took months to get the game up and running correctly. This, along with a pile of bugs and the GlassBox engine being quite unpolished, made for a terrible launch. However all it managed to do at launch was bring EA’s inadequate servers down, which was a major problem considering it required you to remain online at all times if you wished to play. This engine replaced simulating general values and creating visuals to match them with simulating actual individual agents, citizens if you will, and then calculating the rest based on their actions. Speaking of ambition and failure, let’s talk about one of the biggest disappointments EA has ever been responsible for(and that’s saying something). That said, for a Facebook game it was a relatively fun resource management game with a pretty art-style, at the very least worthy of mentioning in this list. It was released in June 2012 but only ran for about a year until EA decided to shut it down to focus on other projects.Īs you may expect from a Facebook game, it suffered from the classic maladies such as micro-transactions and a very simple game-play designed to entertain your half-dead gray matter while you were on the page. Furthermore, due to the brightness on the top screen being so high, the battery life is very poor when not being charged. When the console is partially folded, the brightness level on the top screen return to normal, however, it is unreliable. The console is still usable, but 3D must be turned off and brightness must be set to 1. Was experiencing what is known as the “pop” glitch after about two years of use, where the top screen’s brightness exceeds the maximum for reasons unknown, and if the brightness is set to anything higher than 1, the console seems to short-circuit as turn off instantly.
Not too creative, since I've just been translating an existing game to the NES, but I started this after a drunken conversation with my friend about how much the original NES version of Donkey Kong sucks, and whether it would be possible to actually run an accurate version of the game on the NES hardware, playing exactly like the arcade original. It's a little hobby thing I've been working on recently. I'm currently considering pillarboxing the already low resolution of the NES, That would somewhat help with the bandwidth of the background animations. It's barely possible with emulators by having the OS rotate the entire screen. I've considered tate mode as the scanline limit would nicely align with the bullet stream, but I worry that there would be no motivation for the common person to physically rotate their TV set. So for the NES shmup I've been trying to design calls for a 3:4 ratio in vertical orientation (Mainly for gameplay structural reasons). On the elevator screen I had to turn to some pretty creative solutions to avoid the flickering being too bad on the left column of elevators though. There can easily be a few firefoxes and a Mario down there, too, turning the game into flicker central I don't think it looks that bad on a CRT though, and if you've played stuff like Batman Return of the Joker, you're used to it You're obviously right about the sprites per scanline limit, which was actually my biggest issue, since the game likes to have stuff above eachother, such as the rivet screen where Pauline is right above Donkey Kong, and a hammer spawns below him. The original DK arcade game was created for this orientation, with roughly the same resolution (as you can see the graphics go all the way to the sides of the screen - arcade games didn't have to think about overscan), which is why this version looks like it should, while Nintendo's original NES/Famicom port looks horribly stretched. I've done it a billion times in the past with the same TV. If you're into shooters, rotating your screen like this isn't a foreign concept, commonly referred to as "tate mode" (I'm actually surprised I haven't seen any other NES or SNES homebrews with a tate mode), but it's a good idea to unplug it for 10-15 minutes before turning it on, just to avoid the magnetism causing weird colors. In this case, all I was blocking off was a speaker. CRTs usually have venting in the back, so that's rarely an issue.
